CoronaVirus – the effects on business

In 2020, the UK was already looking forward to a period of uncertainty after the country voted for Brexit, with the UK ‘transitioning’ to leave the EU within 12 months.

Then in March we were hit by the Coronavirus, and quickly almost the complete World closed down – many businesses froze, with staff laid off temporarily as lock-downs were imposed in many different countries.

Irrespective of where and how this virus originated, we were all in it together and the virus swiftly infected hundreds of thousands of people, bringing death to more than 10% of those infected.

The reality is that these facts far outweigh the effect the pandemic has had on businesses around the World. A business can recover – huge numbers of our species cannot.

A new World of Business?

The pandemic has certainly bought misery to many indirectly through closing down economies across the World.

In the short term, many businesses with struggle to survive – many have already closed their doors for good, unable to sustain zero income – or worse, crippling bills that have continued to hit them from those set to profit from crisis.

Some businesses have been pro-active – looking for ways to retain turnover and potentially help in the fight against the virus. Producing PPE has certainly been a way through this for some companies, and could continue to literally offer a life-line until a guaranteed vaccine is found.

There are other opportunities arising – as some companies fold, those holes still need to be filled. Albeit overall business levels will probably be 10 to 15 % below those enjoyed for the preceding years for our industry.

At EAS we’re taking a positive attitude to the situation and are aiming to be back at our normal monthly turnover before the end of 2020 – irrespective of further localised or national lock-downs. Luckily, we’ve been able to stay open throughout – and have continued to service many key industry customers, while also taking on lots of new customers who have had time to look for new suppliers while running well below their own capacity.
